Burslem Town Hall is one of the great civic landmarks of the Mother Town, and this print gives it centre stage. The present building was raised in 1857 on the site of an earlier town hall that had stood since 1761, and it was designed by the architect G.T. Robinson in a confident Baroque style that speaks of Victorian Burslem's ambition and self-belief. Over the years the building has served the community in many guises, working variously as a town hall, a library, and later a recreation centre, always at the heart of local life. It remains one of the most recognisable buildings in Burslem, the historic first among the Six Towns of Stoke-on-Trent.
